Technical difficulties

I’ve been without computer access for the last week or so.  My hard drive was corrupted or something, so I had to get a new one, and it took a bit longer then expected.  Things are still rolling though, and I’ll have some posts up in the next couple of days…stay tuned.

Some videos and pictures that’ll turn your head

Here is the winner of the, “Health Care Reform Video Challenge.”  As a disclaimer, it’s sponsored by the DCC…

Humble Oil is now Exxon by the way.  How much (or how little) things have changed huh?  This is an actual ad from 1960′s, weird…

Here are the health care uninsured rates from 2008, via the census.  It’s amazing how regional the health care crisis is, and how the region that is suffering the most is voting in a bloc against health care reform.

Here’s an interesting article on a study that just came out.  It appears that…

The risk of dying from traumatic injuries is 80% higher for those without insurance.

The massive turnout at Countdowns sponsored free health care clinics.  Take from it what you will, I know he is a bit controversial…

a bit of cool news

So I applied for a job at the Baltimore Examiner to do some freelancing, and they “hired” me a few days ago.  I decided to use my soda tax post from about a month ago, and as of this morning, it went live on the Examiner’s site and is the lead story in the politics section.  The thing is, I get paid depending on the amount of traffic to the story. Here’s the link, feel free to give the story another read if you haven’t already done so.  Thanks!

what’s on tap?

beer tapWe have a bunch of post’s lined up for the next week or so.  I’m working on a post  trying to figure out why Brad Lidge is having such a miserable season, and a look at the most and least, “clutch,” players during the regular and post season.  I’m also formulating something about the death penalty/penal system.

Colin is working on part II of his Afghanistan   report, and might be working on some BCS stuff and the the tragedy of the Cleveland Indians.  Plenty of good writing on tap.

Mike has been loaded with work recently, but he will contribute to our playoff preview that we will try and load up closer to the end of the regular season.  Some analysis, recap, preview and predictions from the OTB crew.  Stay tuned.  And as always, if you’re interested in joining the team and writing, just shoot me an email.

quick hits: last thoughts on “GOP” racism

This will be my last post for a while on the whole racism issue.  Colin did a great job in speaking to the dangers (and maybe the benefits) of accusing people of racism and bringing it back into the forefront of politics and peoples minds.  I was watching Countdown last week, and I think Keith did a great job in reveling the subliminal, and blatantly apparent  racism that the extremities of the GOP** have been using to illicit fear in their base.  The only video I could find was one by a liberal group, so ignore the propoganday stuff (you’ll see what I mean, it’s a bit weird), and just watch the actual MSNBC broadcast if you’d like.

keith

**This refers to people like Rush and Glenn, who unfortunately, are becoming the loud speaker for the GOP.

Here is the video, I’d like to know what you all think.  I know Keith is a little in your face, but I tend to agree with most of what he says, he’s a very intelligent guy (and he used to anchor Sportscenter, so that’s pretty bad ass).

quick hits: Playboy will turn you gay

Here are some interesting links on a Monday…

1.  Republican Senator Tom Coburn’s chief of staff has given us a parenting technique for the ages.  Here is how Playboy will turn you gay.  What a guy!  This Value Votes Summit has to be one of the most frightening things to attend.  When you get a chance, look at 3:15 to 5:00 in the schedule.

2.  Here are some interesting polling numbers from traditionally red states…

92 percent of Iowans say that legalizing gay marriage has had no direct impact on their lives. That certainly deflates a talking point of the anti-LGBT crowd that says same-sex marriage would threaten families or kids

3.  Why the Mets stink, the National league has a hitter they never use, and why baseball managers are a joke.  If you Mets Randolph Fired Baseballcan get through this, you’ll be an elightened baseball fan.

quick hits: anyone want to join the team?

Ever though about being a blogger?  Well, I’d like to get some more writers involved with the site.  I’m sure you are all getting sick of hearing my opinions, so I’d like to open up the floor to everyone.  So if you have some strong opinions on politics, social theory, sports, or just about anything else that will get people to think, feel free to contact me.  One of the reasons I started this blog is because if you ever want to get into the writing world, you need to write and write, it get’s me to think rationally, it’s a good addition to a resume, and I finally got fed up with some of the BS out there and decided to start sharing my own thoughts.  So, if you’re interested, just send me an email about what you’d like to write about and we can go from there….jfester1@gmail.com

quick hits: the problems with the health care industry

Here’s a great look into the twisted world of the health care industry.  The director did a great job in exposing CIGNA for what they really are.  There are many video interviews with former CIGNA insurees about how the giant insurer threw health care out the window for their profit.  “It’s all for the purpose of maximize profit and enhancing  shareholders value for wall street investors,” said a former employee.

To defend these CEO’s a bit…It must be the toughest thing in the world to chose to deny someone coverage, knowing that this result would lead to their bankruptcy or even their death.  Unfortunately, these are decisions that insurance companies need to make every single day.  Why do they have to make them?  It is because our health care companies are run like fortune 500 companies, where profit and value dominate all other aspects.  And maybe this is the problem.  There is no reason that anyone should have to make this decision, and if we were to force the health insurance companies to retool their whole operation so that the focus is giving people the coverage they need, not impressing their shareholders.  In my opinion, there are just some things that need to stay away from the influence of capitalism.  Quarter profits and consumer expectations should not influence whether a patient receives a liver transplant.  Let’s help these CEO’s and take this choice away from them, they may lose some salary but it may help them sleep better.
